The Aquaculture Biotechnology Node carried out on Thursday, 12 November, 2009 in Puerto Montt (Los Lagos Region) a training course on pathology “Saprolegnia, New Control Tools” related to this parasite-based disease present in fresh water. The activity began with the presentation of Mario Reyes, Technical Director of Full House and BioSarh biotechnology laboratory, who presented a summary of biotechnology in aquaculture.
Subsequently, Mr. Bruno Grossi, a representative of Full House, indicated that the Saprolegnia is responsible for more than 50 % of Coho salmon deaths in Japan and Chile, and between 15 % and 25 % of the deaths of its ova.
Moments later, Mr. Mario Reyes Acuña explained the characteristics of Bioshave, “It’s a biological enzymatic additive that biodegrades cellulose and chitin present in the cellular wall of the Saprolegnia sp. This compound is a two-phase natural origin liquid that, according to studies that have been carried out, is neither poisonous nor bio-cumulative and breaks the walls of the pathogen without causing resistance. It is recommended to apply 1-hour Bioshave baths although its efficiency has been verified at 20 minutes application. The recommended dose is 40 ml to 65 ml per m3 depending on the conditions of the culture, prior shaking of the product and dilution in 20 l of water”.
Before the course, a workshop was offered on “Public & Private Support Tools” dictated by Gastón Maltrain, excutive of InnovaChile. Mr. Maltrain presented different support tools for companies, individual business financing and Law 20.241 on CORFO Tax Incentives for private Research and Development.

Next Thursday November 12, a training course will be held about “Saprolegnia: New Control Tools”. The activity will take place from 02:30 PM in the Salón Osorno at the Diego de Almagro Hotel in Puerto Montt.
The seminar will be attended by Mr. Alejandro Yáñez C., Director of the Aquaculture Biotechnology Node; Mr. Mario Reyes, Technical Director of BioSarh S. A.; Mrs. Pedro Acuña, Mr. Enrique Galleguillos, Mr. Bruno Grossi and Mrs. Nelly Díaz.
The central subject of the course will be Saprolegnia, a disease that causes huge economic losses and is considered a plague by salmon producers. The participation in the event is free and invitation is extended to all organizations related to aquaculture, research and development and general public.
This event belongs to the 2nd phase of activities developed by the Dissemination and Transfer Node in Aquaculture Biotechnology of Universidad Austral de Chile, an entity co-financed by InnovaChile of CORFO and whose aim is to strengthen biotechnological development applied to different productive sectors of the aquaculture industry.
